All care is taken when removing the screen; however, in some instances, the screen can get damaged (1 out of 15) if the screen gets damaged a replacement needs to be fitted.

Microsoft Surface Battery Swelling?
If your battery life is still acceptable, but you’ve noticed that the screen is coming away from the chassis, you need to get your Microsoft Surface Battery replaced before screen damage occurs. The swelling of the battery is called thermal overload and is caused by a short in the battery array.
Is your Microsoft Surface not turning on at all, but the charge light is on?

If you have the above symptoms, it not the battery that is at fault. There are several capacitors and fuses on the mainboard that cause these problems, once the screen has been removed. The components are tested and replaced if found faulty.
